Best-before date instead of expiry date

The best-before date, or MHD for short, was only introduced in 1981 with the Food Labelling Regulation – many generations of grandmothers had perfectly cooked, preserved and seasoned before then, without any printed date. There is still no legally defined shelf life; each manufacturer determines how long they guarantee the perfect quality of their product.

Especially small manufacturers play it safe and print rather short best-before dates on their chocolates, pastries and sauces – products which often still show their melt, aroma and character unchanged many months after the best-before date. The MHD is therefore neither an expiry nor an expiration date, but a cautious forecast by the manufacturer. All the gourmet products offered here are perfect in quality and taste – guaranteed.

We source our pasta directly from the manufacturer in Italy, and sometimes – as carefully as we would wish – the shipping company does not handle the fragile freight as carefully as the Pastaioli would deserve.
