Room Fragrance & Diffuser

You open the apartment door after a long day, and even before your jacket is on the hook, it's clear: it's lovely here. It doesn't smell of laundry detergent or morning coffee, but softly of cedar, of an old Portuguese pharmacy, of something you can't quite name – but which immediately makes the room feel like home.

A good room fragrance is rarely present, but always there. It doesn't overpower; it accompanies. If you actively seek it, you find it. If you forget about it, it's simply there.

Castelbel Porto, the house behind the fragrances

Castelbel has been based in Porto since 1917 and is one of the few fragrance manufacturers that develop their own perfumes – instead of licensing them from French perfume houses. The result: fragrances that don't smell like "luxury perfume," but rather like a very precise, Portuguese scent profile. Fig, orange blossom, cedar, clary sage, myrrh – notes that have meaning in Porto and gain character in the air.

Under the labels Castelbel, Portus Cale (Premium), and Ach.Brito (the retro line with historical packaging), you'll find the house's entire Portuguese fragrance heritage.

Tiroler Reine complements this with smaller beeswax-based fragrance products – for those who find Portuguese complexity too much and prefer alpine simplicity.

The forms

• Reed diffusers – the most discreet option. Wooden sticks in fragrance oil, continuous release, 2–3 months lifespan.
• Scent sprays & room sprays – for a quick refresh, right after cooking or before guests arrive.
• Ceramic diffusers – no sticks, just ceramic that slowly releases the scent through pores.
• Scented sachets & drawer diffusers – for wardrobes, laundry drawers.

Where a diffuser belongs: Not in a warm place (heater, kitchen stove) – the warmth accelerates evaporation, the scent dissipates faster, and the room air becomes oversaturated. Ideal: a console in the hallway, a dresser in the bedroom, a shelf in the living room – preferably at medium height, in the room's air circulation. This way, the scent distributes evenly, lasts longer, and is never overpowering.
