The Cantina Tramin Urban Lagrein Riserva 2022 is a dry, powerful red wine from South Tyrol. Lagrein is an ancient indigenous grape variety that captivates with its dark ruby to garnet red color. The wine has aromas of violets, blackberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants. On the palate, the Cantina Tramin Urban Lagrein is well-structured, impressive with its typically tart nuances, full-bodied, and with velvety tannins. Here, wild berries meet bittersweet chocolate, culminating in a long-lasting finish. This high-quality, complex Lagrein pairs wonderfully with hearty Tyrolean dishes, especially game dishes and dark meats, and also stands out alongside aged mountain cheeses.

Cantina Tramin – Winemaking

The 2022 vintage began with above-average temperatures in spring, which favored early budding. The persistently warm temperatures in May led to rapid flowering. Thanks to targeted vineyard work and occasional rain, the vines were kept in a stress-free state despite summer phases with extreme heat. The grape harvest began almost two weeks earlier than usual. Because the weather played along perfectly, grapes of outstanding quality could be harvested throughout the entire harvest period. The red wines of the 2022 vintage are impressive; they benefit from a high degree of ripeness and develop complex fruit and full flavor with robust aromas.

The 20 to 100-year-old vines for this South Tyrolean red wine from Cantina Tramin are located on hillsides between 230-300 m above sea level, with limestone, porphyry, and sandy loam soils. The exposure of the vineyards varies greatly. Half are west-facing, 40% southwest-facing, and 10% south-facing. The grapes were harvested at the time of optimal physiological ripeness from early to late October, brought to the winery in small containers, and destemmed. Maceration fermentation takes place in large wooden barrels at a controlled temperature (28°C), followed by malolactic fermentation. Aging takes place in barriques for 12 months, and for an additional 6 months in concrete tanks. After bottling, the wine is stored in the bottle for at least 6 more months. Only 20,000 bottles of Urban Lagrein are produced.
