Enjoy Karl May Riesling Osthofen – Organic Wine from the Wonnegau
The Karl May Riesling Osthofen 2022 is an organic wine from the Wonnegau region in Rheinhessen. Characterized by aging in wooden barrels, it presents itself full-bodied and powerful on the palate, with ripe pear and red apple, sweet honeydew melon, spicy herbal notes, toasted nuts and brioche enchanting the nose and mouth. Much richness and a mineral saltiness complete this impression.
Despite its volume, the Karl May Riesling Osthofen is an elegant food companion for heartier dishes, such as pan-fried pork with mushrooms in cream sauce, cod with a nut crust and pumpkin vegetables, or well-aged cheese. We recommend a large glass and a serving temperature of 10-12 degrees Celsius.
Karl May – Wine Production
The Karl May Riesling Osthofen is a village wine from the Osthofener Goldberg and Bechtheimer Geyersberg vineyards on the edge of the Wonnegau. There, on deep loess soils interspersed with calcareous marl, the grapes for Karl May's Riesling Osthofen grow on old vines in organically managed vineyards.
To harvest fully ripe Riesling grapes in autumn, Fritz and Peter May begin as early as January with gentle pruning and early defoliation of the grape zone for optimal sun exposure, as well as yield reduction through green harvesting in early summer. The selective hand-picking of the grapes often takes place in several passes. The path to the new winery is not far, where the grapes are gently processed. After a short maceration period, they are gently pressed, and the must is spontaneously fermented in wooden barrels, where it remains on the lees for 6 months and is then aged in wood. This brings power and complexity, fullness and creaminess to the village wine.
